It’s the first day of 2019 and there’s no better way to start off the year than by telling you the beauty products I loved the most in 2018! You might notice that some products came out in 2017 but 2018 is the year when I tried them. I also didn’t include a product for every category – you’ll notice that highlight, foundation, cleanser etc. are missing. This is is because I wanted to only mention the products that I LOVE instead of “really like”. The list of products below are truly the ones that stood out to me and what I would instantly repurchase (I already have for a couple items). Enjoy!
Anastasia Beverly Hills Soft Glam Palette
The eyeshadow palette to rule them all. Anastasia Beverly Hills has come out with SO MANY eyeshadow palettes this year that I kind of stopped caring. I did buy the Modern Renaissance palette because of how much everyone loved it but only found myself using the same 3 shades. When Soft Glam came out, I knew this was the palette for me. It has all the neutral shades you could ever want plus some amazing shimmers to place over the lid.
I can use it for everyday makeup for work or for more fancier events. It truly is one of my favourite palettes and is something I use daily – plus I find the shadows very easy to blend. It is on the pricier side ($55), but is a palette that will last you a long time and something you’ll definitely get a lot of use out of.
Too Faced Born This Way Multi-Sculpting Concealer
If I had to choose one concealer to use for the rest of next year (I wouldn’t want to but you know, if I HAD to) – it would be this! I already reviewed this concealer earlier this year in a blog post but still wanted to mention it. This concealer is full coverage without being heavy or drying. I love using it for “no makeup makeup looks” since it blends out so easily and for spot concealing acne scars or pimples. You also get so much product for the price – $36. I can’t think of any concealer that gives you 0.50 ounces of product (basically half the amount of a traditional foundation).
Fresh Rose Deep Hydration Toner
I bought this product when I was in the aisle of death (the checkout line at Sephora) but am so glad I got it! I personally don’t like the scent of roses – it reminds me of old lady – but the scent of this toner isn’t too overpowering. I love that it’s SO hydrating and makes my skin feel soothed and (this might be weird) but clean! I put it on with a cotton pad every time I get out of the shower cause my face is dry from the hot water and my face instantly feels better. I will admit I discovered this product late in 2018, around November, but I love it so much that I had to mention it. The full size is $54 which is definitely pricey but I do think it’s worth the money – plus toners tend to last a long time.
Morphe Highlight & Contour Beauty Sponge
I’ve been a Beauty Blender (BB) believer since the first time I tried it – NOTHING could compare to this sponge until I discovered the Morphe Beauty Sponge. I’ll admit it took me a while to get used to the shape since I was so used to the “teardrop” shape of the BB but now I prefer the Morphe Sponge over it! Once wet, the sponge is super soft and squishy, but not as soft as the BB. I actually prefer it this way because it actually soaks up WAY less product. It blends just as well as the BB and works great with powders. And can we talk about how it’s only $9.50?! With such a great price tag and great quality, I’ll be using this sponge over a BB any day.
Belif Aqua Bomb
I thought I had found my all-time favourite moisturizer for combo-oily skin (the Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel) and while I still love it, the Aqua Bomb has taken its #1 place. In the winter I usually have to mix in an oil with a moisturizer to really hydrate my skin but I don’t have to do that with this product because it’s already SO hydrating. It doesn’t leave my skin feeling greasy at all and while it is quite pricey ($47), I do think it’s worth the money. I also wrote a comparison review of this moisturizer which you can read here.
L’Occitane Shea Cleansing Oil
For the longest time I was using the Clinique Take Off The Day Balm (which I still love) but I wanted to try an oil instead. I was tired of waiting for the balm to break down and wanted something quicker – yes, first world problems. A friend of mine suggested I try this and boy am I glad she did! This cleansing oil takes EVERYTHING off in less than a minute, including my mascara. Since it’s also made with shea oil, my skin is left feeling super smooth and hydrated which is great during the winter time. I’ll admit I haven’t tried many cleansing oils but I do really love this one.
Origins Original Skin Retexturizing Mask
I saw a beauty blogger friend of mine (@maskmeanything) rave about this mask so I bought this purely off of her recommendation. So glad I did because I LOVE it! The name of the mask describes it perfectly – it’s perfect for when I haven’t exfoliated in a while or my skin is feeling really oily. I leave it on for 10 or so minutes and once I wash it off, I truly am left with “original skin.” It has exfoliants in it which I rub all over my face when I’m washing it off. Most clay masks tend to dry me out which is why I mostly use them in the summer, but this mask uses rose clay and doesn’t dry me out at all!
I think this mask would be great for all skin types. Although, if you have dry skin I would recommend using a good moisturizer after. It retails for $33 which is a bit on the higher end but you get 2.5 oz of product which will last you a long time!
Marc Jacobs Enamored Lip Gloss – Love Drunk
I bought this lip gloss in January 2018 so I truly did have a whole year to love it. I was hesitant to buy a $35 lip gloss but I use it almost daily. The shade “Love Drunk” is a “my lips but better shade” on me which I absolutely love. The formula is pretty opaque so I tend to use it on days when I don’t want to wear lip balm or a full on liquid lipstick, but something in between! The formula isn’t sticky at all and glides on super smooth. It even has a TINY bit of a mint scent which I personally enjoy. I used it all year long and still have a ton of product left. I even included it in this blog post where I talk about my top 5 nude lip products.
L’Oreal Lash Paradise Primer
I’ve never used a lash primer before because I always thought it was too “extra.” Since I have short straight lashes so I was willing to basically try anything to give them more life. I bought this lash primer and used it with the matching L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara and found the combo to be too clumpy and it weighed down my lashes. The next time I tried it, I used a lighter mascara (The Benefit Roller Lash or Bad Gal Bang Mascara) and instantly fell in love with it! My lashes had way more volume AND length and stayed curled all day. I now use it everyday and find that the primer itself already give my lashes the thickness and length it needs so when I add a light mascara on top, it just tops it off. Plus it’s from the drugstore and pretty affordable – what more could you want?
Neutrogena Body Care Body Wash – Grapefruit
This year I struggled with chest acne for the first time. I had dozens of tiny pimples all over my chest and even down to my breasts. A friend of mine recommended this body wash to me. I had always seen it in the drugstore but never thought to try it. I used it only on my chest/shoulders for two weeks and noticed such a huge difference! I stopped using it for a week and noticed a couple pimples show up. I now use it every time I’m in the shower to keep chest acne away. I also tend to hate the smell of grapefuit but this smells amazing – such an uplifting scent in the shower!
Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer
This bronzer came out last year but 2018 was really the year I fell in love with it. The butter bronzer smells like paradise and truly glides on like butter. I like that the formula isn’t too pigmented since it can be really easy to go overboard on bronzer. However, like I do love this product, the shade range is atrocious. Physicians Formula originally came out with 2 shades (Light Bronzer and Bronzer) and have extended the line by 2 darker shades now. The shade I currently use is “Bronzer” and looks super natural yet beautiful on my skin during the winter time.
Milani Baked Blush in Luminoso
This isn’t a new product to launch in 2018 but it’s new to me. I’ve heard every beauty blogger rave about this peachy blush and I was hesitant to try it out since I go towards more mauvey-pink blushes. I’ll admit it the first couple times I tried it I thought it was “ok” but after giving it another chance I quickly fell in love with it. This formula gives your cheeks a soft sheen and the blush itself is buildable which is great! This is now my go-to blush when I want a more “fresh” look since it brightens my face a bit. I’d also say it’ll probably look best on light-medium skintones.
Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel Cream with SPF 15
It’s very rare that I will completely finish a moisturizer to the last drop, but I did with this one! Over the summer I was looking for a moisturizer with SPF but didn’t want to spend a lot of money so I opted for this one. There are so many products in Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost line but this one is a gel-cream which makes it perfect for my combo-oily skin. At first I thought this gel-cream was “ok” but the more I used it, the more I loved it.
I found the formula to be hydrating but not greasy and it worked really well under my makeup. I used it every morning before applying my makeup knowing that the SPF in it would protect my skin during the day. I do wish that it had more than SPF 15 (you need at least SPF 30 to really make a difference) but I do love that it comes with a pump and it was my go-to moisturizer to travel with in the summer! I will definitely be repurchasing this when the summer comes around in 2019.
And that’s all I have! There are a couple other products that I love and use everyday but these are the ones that come to mind when I think of the BEST. Keep in mind we all have different makeup and skin types so if there’s a product I mentioned that you don’t love, that’s ok! As we start the new year I’d like to say a big THANK YOU to those of you who read my blog posts. If you enjoy reading, please share! It really means a whole lot and do know that I always appreciate your support.
Happy New Year!
