We’ve all had acne one way or another as a teenager. For me, I got it as soon as I hit puberty until my third year of university. Some years were better than others but there is no denying that I would wake up to a newly formed pimple everyday.

During the summer of 2016, I had the WORST cystic acne of my life. At this point, I had probably tried everything on the market and spent at least a couple hundred dollars. I tried charcoal masks, salicylic acid, proactiv, prescription medication and even a silk pillow case that claimed to “get rid of acne”. I remember feeling so self conscious and packing on makeup everyday to try and cover it up.

My cystic acne during the summer of 2016 (the worst my skin has ever been)

Fast forward to now and for the first time in my life, I feel like I’ve “defeated” cystic acne. It could be the fact that I turned 20 and grew out of it, the new products I was using, or both. Either way, each morning when I wake up and look in the mirror I feel so relieved to no longer find a newly formed pimple. It feels amazing knowing that since elementary, I can finally explore different skincare products that aren’t targeted towards acne.

My skin as of June 2017 (the best my skin has ever been)

So without further ado, here at the products I used to get rid of my cystic acne:

1. Kate Somerville Eradikate

If you have cystic acne, white heads or the occasional breakout, you NEED this in your life. In my opinion, this is the product that completely changed my skin for the better. After your skincare routine before going to bed, dip a qtip into the pink fluid at the bottom and place it on every single pimple you have. The next morning, it will have shrunken by half the size!

The biggest thing for me with this product is that by the time I finished the whole bottle, my acne had gone away and it never came back. Yes, still get around 2-3 breakouts around my period, but nothing as close to what I had before. I threw out the bottle once I ran out and have never had to buy it again since. That’s how you know the product has done its job.

2. Sephora Collection Purifying Mud Mask

Charcoal masks are known for being really great for oily, acne-prone skin. This one from Sephora is my favourite! This mask gets rid of the excess oil on my skin and dried up my pimples. Since it’s a detoxifying mask my acne did get worse for a little bit, but that’s because it was getting rid of the gunk under my skin. I’ve also heard this mask is a dupe for the infamous Glam Glow Supermud mask. While I haven’t tried it for myself, this mask is $25 and lasted me almost an entire year!

I repurchased it and still use it for when I want my skin to be more matte and refreshed.

3. Murad Clarifying Cleanser

This cleanser has a really nice cooling effect and wasn’t too harsh on my skin. Other acne cleansers dry the heck out of my skin and leave it feeling so tight! While this cleanser didn’t get rid of my acne over night, it was gentle enough for morning and night time use. Also has a great smell!

Keep in mind that everyone’s skin is different and we all react to products in a different way! Also, if you’re struggling with acne as well, it will come to an end! I never thought it could happen to me but it did.

What products do you use for getting rid of acne? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I love mud masks for my oily skin. I haven’t tried out Sephoras though. Will definitely consider trying it next! Thanks for the great review!

  2. The before and after pics did it for me. I always ask for evidence when people speak highly of a product. I have never used any of Sephora’s product but highly considering this. I’m going to share this info.

    1. I’m so glad! Before and after pics are definitely important. The Sephora mask is definitely one of my favourites. Thanks for reading 🙂

    1. Aw thank you! Charcoal is really good for oily skin and detoxing so I’d get a sample or something to see if you like it. Thanks for reading!

  3. I haven’t defeated the acne per say, but I have reduced the number of pimples that are present by using the G&H honey soap coupled with a pineapple papaya scrub and deep cleaner from Ettenio. Currently, I’m battling with dark spots. I’ve used every product that is designed to get rid of them but no solution. I’ve had acne since the 3rd grade, and I’m now 25.

    1. I totally relate. While my acne has gone away I’m dealing with the scars and dark spots that are left over. I’ve heard lemon juice is really good for it and I actually love the Loreal Bright Reveal Pads. I noticed a major difference in my skin after a week! Thanks for those cool suggestions and thanks for reading! 🙂

  4. These were really great tips I wish I had known when I was younger. My acne was terrible when I was younger, especially around my forehead! I guess I can say I am blessed that now I only get a pimple or too. I’m glad you found a way that helps you!

  5. Congrats on “defeating” acne. Hooray! I will pass on this great post to a friend of mine. Thanks for sharing all the ways and products you managed to “manage” acne. This is a great resource.
